I’m switching my truck’s insurance to Hagerty for a few reasons. I won’t get into that now, but the little sales pitch from my agent was comical. Reading directly from marketing materials, she says,
“Oh and one nice benefit of Hagerty Plus is you get a guaranteed flatbed for your classic car! It’s not like AAA, they’ve got their own fleet and they will guarantee a flatbed for you in the event of a breakdown.”
[jim_carrey_oh_reeeaaaalllyyy _dot_gif]
Ok, first of all, I highly doubt Hagerty literally has trucks all over the place. They contract with tow companies like AAA does
. Most of those companies are probably the exact same ones, it’s not like I live in a populated area. Second, MOST tow companies have flatbed (aka rollback?) trucks anyway, because so many cars are AWD these days and can’t be lifted by one end and dragged around
without messing things up. And third, my truck IS one of the kinds
of vehicles you could tow by hanging up on 2 wheels. Not to mention, I’m not terribly worried about it getting scratched.
But wait, it gets better. She sent me a nice little marketing PDF with an image at the top, showing me what I’d be getting for my $35.00.
This is where I laughed out loud. My truck looks WAY more like the one on the right than the one on the left. In fact, if mine were a little rusty and had a tow hook, you could use IT as the image up top. I tried to explain to her why I thought this was funny, but she wasn’t really getting it. I just said, “Yeah I don’t need this coverage, thanks.”
The best part is that Hagerty is cheaper than my old insurance, and has better coverage. They understand values of classic vehicles, and there’s $0 deductible on comprehensive, collision, and glass. I do need a new windshield.... hmm...

I have AAA and always request a flatbed. It usually takes 15 minutes instead of 10 if you ask for a flatbed, but I always get one.

It would be pretty funny to demand a flat bed for your truck though :)

Last time I needed a truck from AAA, and I didn’t care if it was a flatbed or not, it took them like 2-1/2 hours!

I am contemplating getting Hagerty as the insurer for my 126 when I get around to importing one...no idea what the cost will be in Canadialand for it though!

10
minutes! I have never had one come in less than 45. Anywhere.

Wow, that’s not cool. Longest wait I had was 37 minutes, because they accidentally sent a standard tow truck and had to wait for them to send a flat bed. I usually will get a tow within 15 minutes of calling them.
I’ve had had to use them quite a bit because I own two old BMWs and a couple of bikes, and I have buddies / family with similar taste in vehicles

“And SOFT STRAPS ONLY”
I’d probably call my friend who knows these trucks really well. If it was something I couldn’t figure out, which seems unlikely in the first place. He also has an F250 and a flatbed trailer of his own. So...

No idea, but my truck is going to be $174/ year. Possibly less. They certainly do understand classic cars, and I think as a group, it’s a lower-risk group than the average daily-driver crowd, so the rates can be lower. Or they charge the guys with classic Ferraris a ton of money because they can’t get insured anywhere else? And pass the savings on to... me? hahahah

Maybe I should try Hagerty again, but last time I got a quote from them for my ‘Vette it was like double what I was paying through my insurer for our daily drivers.

I’m going to preface this rant with: Especially if it is cheaper, Hagerty is probably a good choice.
That said, I have a bone to pick with them. I’ve looking into using them several times and each time they’ve found a new and different way to piss me off.
I was all set to use them with the Scout, back in the day. I had a quote that I liked, I had the coverage all set up, and all I needed to do is call them to activate it. (I don’t recall why I had to call rather than complete online.) Despite having configured everything and put in all the info, I had to go over that again with the person on the phone, who eventually informed me that although the Scout was in a private, controlled access, covered parking garage, which is one of the options when you were setting up a quote, they weren’t going to insure it because it needed to be in a private garage. WHY DO YOU EVEN HAVE THE OTHER THINGS AS AN OPTION THEN!?
Next time I tried I had a garage, having bought a house, but IIRC they wouldn’t insure the Dune Buggy because it was not an Manx . Ended up with Geico on that one. (I don’t judge them too harshly for that one, in retrospect.)
The last time I checked them they cost more than Geico on the Alfa and I was just over it. The question that always gets me is “If you’re primary vehicle was unavailable, would you drive this one to work/ school?” No... of course not. Why would I drive a perfectly functional car to work? If the Volvo breaks down it makes perfect sense to rent a car rather than drive any of the others!
...
I get that they’re a low-risk insurance provider, but their website is set up as a “come one come all” sort of thing and can, frankly, eat a dick.
Aaaaaand done. Sorry about that.

Could be where I live, in San Diego country, we got a lot of everything everywhere, including tow companies.

Hagerty refused to quote on the 348, for some reason. Collector car insurance seems like it rocks though. Hopefully, I never have to use it, but it seems like I’m well covered. Agreed
value, no deductible, spare parts coverage, and my agreed value amount increases every quarter (resets upon renewal, when you are supposed to call them to increase your coverage). Mine came with a towing package (up to 100 miles) but I’m not sure if it’s as good as AAA. I should probably just get AAA as well. My DD is a 196k mile VAG product lol

Hmm, strange. My agent suggested them because the truck is being rented by a company to use in a video shoot of some kind. Hagerty was fine with that kind of use, our regular company was like, “uh, that’s a gray area” which means “you’re not covered.”

I miss the old “bumper sling” tow trucks.

Ah, San Diego County. You have more people in your county than I have in my whole state. That’s... related.
It’s funny, my wife and I both drove high-mileage “older” BMWs for years, and only used AAA a couple of times. Once for the water pump on my wife’s car when it quit, and once for... a coolant hose on the same car. Oh I did have mine towed about 500 feet one time. I could have driven it, in hindsight, but long story short. I didn’t.
Yeah 45 minutes is pretty standard. 90 minutes is more like it. Rural life, yo.

Might be that I’m not the typical classic car owner being on the younger side of the spectrum.

I live in the Chicago suburbs, so we’ve got plenty of everything as well. It was ridiculous .

Haha, no that all sounds fair, and pretty standard insurance company BS. They do not live in reality. What’s funny is, mine is being used for a TV shoot and that’s what prompted me to ask my existing company if they were OK with that (they weren’t, really) and Hagerty was fine with it.

I’ve only had to use them twice now. When I needed lockout service, they were on it. I wasn’t even late to my meeting. That tow though, that was insane. Luckily my truck was stranded at my buddy’s house. He sent me home in his extra car, and flipped the tow truck driver my keys when they finally did show up.

I was swayed for sure by the agreed value and zero deductible bit. Spare parts I don’t totally get how that part works, to be honest. I probably won’t use it.
We have AAA with 100 miles of towing because my wife works ~50 miles away from home, and until recently she was driving a 209k mile BMW. My daily is still a 15 year old BMW with 172k miles. We’ve used it less than you might think, but when you need it, you need it.
This winter, my wife is driving her 2015 Mini on snow tires, but I refused to get run-flat snows. So if she gets a flat, I’m just having the car towed to my house where I’ll bolt on a summer tire until we get it fixed. She can drive our Volvo in the meantime.

You could lift my truck by its bumpers, I’m sure. Completely off the ground, even.

Eh, me either - I’m 37. I got my ‘72 Ford F100 when I was 26. This one I’ve only had for about 2 years.
![]() 10/10/2018 at 11:43 |

I was 26 when I got that quote from Hagerty...so maybe their adjusters just threw up red flags between “Corvette” and “20-something year old” being in the same quote

With a commute that long, it’s good to have the peace of mind. My commute is about 8 miles so I could run home if I needed to haha
I think the spare parts is in case someone steals a set of wheels or something. I don’t really know, but that wasn’t the selling point of the policy. It was just a nice to have on top of what I was already planning on purchasing.
Do you have a mileage limit? I just dropped mine from 6000/ year to 3000. I’ve had the car almost two years now and have only driven it 5000 miles.
![]() 10/10/2018 at 11:50 |

ha! Right, actually... that’s probably exactly the thing.
![]() 10/10/2018 at 11:54 |

I’ve never had to get a tow, but non-tow response times have been all over the place for me. Anything from < 5 minutes to an hour and a half. Also once when I needed a jump, there was a AAA guy jumping another car across the street, so I just asked him to swing by when he finished.
![]() 10/10/2018 at 11:55 |

I don’t have a limit, but the estimate given was 2,500. That’s more than enough at least for the way I’m using it now. I’ve come closer to 1,000 /yr.
I see what you mean on the spare parts. Like, if you had a whole spare engine in your garage or something. Or body panels, that kind of stuff maybe? People don’t usually have that kind of stuff for their DD. But a classic, yeah, maybe.
![]() 10/10/2018 at 12:15 |

Haha! :P
Is there a mileage cap on your coverage?
![]() 10/10/2018 at 12:15 |

Huh, they just refused to quote the 911SC I just got too. Maybe because I said it would be in regular use and I was over the mileage they’d prefer ? Who do you use for the 348?
![]() 10/10/2018 at 12:34 |
|
I tend to accumulate parts. Wheels are on my to-do list so I’ll have a spare set in the future. Plus whatever parts I find for a good price that would be good to have for a backup. I know guys that have complete transmissions, multiple sets of wheels, etc. I’m not that bad, but can easily imagine how that happens lol
![]() 10/10/2018 at 12:43 |

It was weird. They quoted me on a 355 but not the 348. When I was looking at a 355, I was going to register it in CO and they had a super low mileage limit since they assume it will be in the garage half the year. So they do have a few specific limitations, it seems.
I actually went through Geico who underwrites for American Modern. They have meh reviews but they have seemed to be pretty helpful so far. My main complaint is their online portal is pretty useless for anything other than looking at your policy documents. But they seem responsive enough when I call and it seems like I have pretty good coverage. I’m not sure if they will insure you if it’s your primary car but they might have different options.
![]() 10/10/2018 at 13:15 |

I’ve was reading how the classic insurance market is cracking down on some classic after getting burned by people using it then for daily use. It has come up in my state as they also offer classic plates/registration that used to have an annual mileage limit attached.
When I added my sc to my 914 the policy nearly tripled.
![]() 10/10/2018 at 13:17 |

I tend to go in extended drives and it has more than paid itself off being that aaa only covers the first 3 miles then is $4/mile after that.

I keep hearing how everyone loves them but frankly my experience was incredibly dd isappointing. Maybe its because I live in NY which makes everything about owning a car worse but they basically refused to cover my Mustang. For now I’ll refuse to give them a single penny of my money. In the end I just added i t to my BMWs policy and I have pretty much unrestricted use to do whatever I want.
![]() 10/10/2018 at 13:46 |

Interesting... I have antique plates on it, which does *theoretically* restrict use, but that’s based only on enforcement. No mileage limits exist (yet) from the State. But then, “Live Free or Die” and all that.
![]() 10/10/2018 at 13:47 |
|
There’s no cap that I’m aware of but
I estimated 2,500 miles a year, which is about double what I’ve done so far per year. That’s enough buffer that they can’t say I exceeded it - but like I said, it doesn’t appear to be a hard limit.
![]() 10/10/2018 at 13:52 |

Depends on your AAA membership; ours is 100 miles. But also the standard coverage was something like 5 or 10 miles. Maybe it depends on the area? I can’t imagine out in Wyoming or something, that 5 miles would get you anywhere, compared to a developed area.
![]() 10/10/2018 at 14:33 |
|
I wouldn’t be surprised. I estimated yearly mileage at 8,000, maybe that scared them off. That’s probably unrealistically high for me anyway, but I wanted to see what, if anything, they’d do for basically no mileage limit. Maybe I’ll try for less and see what they say, but my State Farm agent that insures everything else quoted me $55/mo for full coverage, going to be hard to beat that.
![]() 10/10/2018 at 14:35 |

You’re now the second or third person to tell me Geico came through for their special-interest car, glad to hear that. My State Farm agent who has all our other insurance quoted $55/mo for full coverage, so I’ll probably end up there.

My AAA will tow to the state line for me. It’s the more expense plan, but after one tow over 20 miles, it’s paid for itself.
![]() 10/10/2018 at 15:57 |

Yeah I have the Plus RV plan, and it will get me to the state line for a tow. And I get 3 or 4 a year. Definitely worth the $110.

I’m paying about that with full coverage. I think my mile age is limited to 4.5k a year.
